91. BAR INTERIOR, 1934. A typical Astoria bar on 18th Street and 27th Avenue in 1934. The tin ceiling and fixtures survive from pre-Prohibition days, but the portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the cathedral radio and the stock are new. (Photo by Henry Dehls; Robert F. Eisen collection.)

92. JUNCTION OF JERICHO AND HEMPSTEAD TURNPIKES (JAMAICA AND HEMPSTEAD AVENUES) AT 212th STREET, LOOKING EAST, ca. 1910. The three-story building at the left is all in this picture that survives today. Fox’s East End Hotel on the other corner died with Prohibition, and the Rose farmhouse, almost completely obscured by trees, succumbed in the 1920’s. Thomas Callister’s wagon works, founded in 1853, was the biggest industry in Queens Village, turning out farm wagons for all the local farmers. In later years Callister went in for automobiles and built a modern showroom in 1926. (Photo by Frederick J. Weber; The Queens Borough Public Library.)
